The California Department of Conservation, Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources (“DOGGR”) is recommending aquifer exemptions for Class II injection wells in our communities. Under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, the EPA must approve this exemption before it is valid. These attempts follow revelations in 2015 that California regulators have let oil companies drill thousands of illegal injection wells and dump oil waste into scores of protected underground water supplies across the state.
Meanwhile, as the State and the EPA review these exemptions, they are allowing operators to continue polluting our water. Since Trump’s EPA will not be anything other than a rubberstamp for these applications, it is crucial for Californians to demand its state regulators protect our water. Now is the moment for our state legislators and Governor to stand up against an anti-environmental administration and ensure that our water is protected for future generations.
These exemptions would sacrifice our precious water resources to permanent pollution, turning our aquifers into dumping sites for oil and gas companies. Clean water is our right because it is the basis for life and essential to our health and the well-being of our community. This cannot continue and that’s why it’s so important for you to join us in standing up to Big Oil now.
