February 24, 2017, San Luis Obispo Town Hall Meeting:

Questions asked:

What are your plans for an economic development plan?

As of 2015, 30.4% of Santa Maria residents were living below the federal poverty line of about $24,000 year.

That’s 10% higher poverty than the statewide average, and the Santa Barbara County average is 20%.

That means 1 out every 5 families in Santa Barbara county have an income of $24,000, or less.

78% of Santa Maria residents rent, they don’t own their own home. That’s 40% higher than statewide.

Santa Maria is 73% Hispanic, and are part of the agriculture industry, without much else to rely on.

Your office is in San Luis Obispo. What will be your interest in creating an economic plan to address these issues in north Santa Barbara county?
