Voters who are Registered with a Political Party other than Democratic,
who want to vote for a Democratic President, must RE-REGISTER. If after the February 18, 2020 registration deadline, please call the Elections Office at 1-800-722-8683, ext. 7, to speak to a person during regular hours for a new California voting law regarding party registration after the deadline.
Only Voters registered with an accepted political party can vote for
that party’s presidential candidates in a primary election.

To be eligible to vote for a Presidential candidate
in the Primary in California if you are registered
as “No Party Preference”:
In order to vote for a Presidential candidate
in the California Primary,
your ballot must be one of three selections:
– Democratic Party (the only ballot with Democratic Presidential candidates)
– America Independent Party
– Libertarian Party
Any ballot with “No Party Preference”,
(or otherwise known as DS or “Decline to State”)
will not have a Presidential candidate on it.
Here is the easiest remedy to register as a Democrat:
– If you vote in person and you are registered as “No Party Preference”
you may simply request a desired crossover Democratic ballot when checking in at the polls,
or re-register with the Elections Office if past the registration deadline. Call the Elections Office at 1-800-722-8683, Ext. 7 to speak to a person.

– If you vote-by-mail and you are registered as “No Party Preference”
you will receive a postcard from the Santa Barbara County elections official
in advance that will allow you to select the political party of your choice.
Then after making a selection, return the post card by mail.
These postcards will be sent in advance of vote-by-mail ballots being sent out.
Otherwise….
“No Party Preference” voters who do not respond to this postcard will be mailed
a ballot without any presidential candidates listed.
If this happens, they are still able to request a crossover ballot from their
county elections official via:

Voters can also take their non-partisan vote-by-mail ballot to their polling place
(or any vote center in a Voters’ Choice Act County) and exchange it for a ballot
with presidential candidates.
