Dawn Addis,  Candidate for State Assembly,  District 35,  proudly Endorsed by the  DEMOCRATIC CLUB OF SANTA MARIA VALLEY,  met with constituents on Saturday,  February 8, 2020, at the Democratic Club Headquarters, 327 E. “I’m running because the current Assembly representative is out of touch with the voters in this district on many important issues.

I support common sense gun safety laws.  I’ll vote for laws to stop ghost guns and stronger background checks to keep guns out of the wrong hands.  That’s why I’ve been endorsed by the Brady Campaign. On the other hand, Jordan Cunningham earned an “A” grade from the NRA.

Protecting the Coast and addressing the Climate Crisis are top priorities for me.  I’ ll vote to reduce plastics and toxic pollution and support more funding to preserve our natural resources and protect wildlife.  That’s why I’ve been endorsed by the Sierra Club and the California League of Conservation Voters.   In comparison, Jordan Cunningham failed the 2019 Sierra Club Legislative Scorecard with a grade of 40% and an “F-” grade from PAW PAC.

Our kids should be are off limits to big nicotine and disingenuous politicians.  Obviously the incumbent and I are different, but the more I learn the more upset I feel. A lot of it has to do with our backers. He is backed by a vaping company, JUUL, that markets to kids. I am backed by you.  What’s wrong with getting money from JUUL? JUUL markets to kids with unsafe nicotine products in flavors like watermelon and cherry. They are purposefully creating the next generation of addiction that we will all pay for. As a mom I’m worried and frustrated.  On Council I have voted numerous times to ban the sale of these products in my community. I know moms, dads, teachers, principals, and kids here are worried. I am working hard to protect our youth. The incumbent is working against us, while getting campaign rich.”

MORE ABOUT DAWN:

Prior to my current district leadership role, I served as department chair and classroom teacher. During that time, I became engaged with the unique differences, struggles, strengths, and celebrations of my community. I keep the wellbeing of children and families at the heart of all of my decision making.

As a Morro Bay City Council Member I put people at the heart of my decision making.  Being a mother, a public educator, and a community organizer guides my actions. Through my leadership and my votes I have advocated for increased housing, clean water security,  improved infrastructure, local jobs, and economic development. I am experienced at building common ground and following through on tough issues to deliver results.

The Central Coast is ready for a representative who is as hard-working as we are. It is time for a proactive approach in Sacramento.  It is time for a leader who will take meaningful action to create economic and social opportunities. It is time to speak boldly for the people of the California.

You’ve asked how the incumbent and I are different, and I am proud to share. I show true love for environmental protection, he does not. This is exemplified with

  • My key endorsements from the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV), the Sierra Club and the California Environmental Justtce Alliance (CEJA).
  • My pledge not to take oil money
  • My leadership to oppose the expansion of fracking
  • My vote to protect Dog Beach
  • The incumbent, does not show love for Central Coast lands. His campaign depends on Chevron and Phillips 66 money, and his voting record from CLCV and CEJA are both below 30%.

Cuesta is an incredibly important learning institution for the Central Coast, and the CCFT is an integral part of its excellence. My husband Marcus and I originally came to the Central Coast almost 20 years ago so that he could attend Cuesta as a reentry student. Cuesta’s engaged teachers helped him launch his career and through the years has been important to me, my husband, and our two sons. For that, I will always be personally grateful to the faculty and to the school, and for its incalculably valuable contribution to our community.”
